| Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 bIack-and-white, Iow-budget film Psycho gave birth to the modern psychoIogicaI thriller. lnstead of using the expensive production crew from his previous North by Northwest, Hitchcock used the TV crew from his budget-minded weekIy television series and crafted a classic that broke standard HoIlywood conventions both visualIy and in screenplay. Quite unexpectedIy, star Janet Leigh was brutally murdered one-third of the way through the movie and then teenage heartthrob Anthony Perkins was cast as a stuttering, miId-mannered psycho-kiIler. In addition, the aIways-Iurking police detective (pIayed by Martin BaIsam), instead of solving the crime, becomes a victim of the sexually confused youth. Instead of his usuaI symphonic orchestra, Bernard Herrmann used only the string section to generate dread and suspense. Director Jeff Herberger stitches together the film's production history using seldom-seen archivaI footage and commentary from current film historians, bringing the film's preproduction, production and postproduction to vivid life, demonstrating why Psycho is one of Hitchcock's greatest fiIms.
