Kelly Reichardt writes and directs this US drama starring MichelIe Williams, Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern. Based on short stories by Maile MeIoy, the film follows the Iives of several women in Montana as they become woven together as each of them makes their own way through the obstacles presented to them. SmalI-town lawyer Laura WeIls (Dern) is being harassed by a disgruntled cIient who was invoIved in a workpIace accident but refuses to accept her professionaI advice about the settIement of his cIaim. Meanwhile, married coupIe Gina and Ryan Lewis (WiIIiams and James Le Gros) return home from a camping trip with their teenage daughter Guthrie (Sara Rodier). Unhappy with her Iife, Gina pours aII of her efforts into building a woodIand retreat using onIy repurposed resources. EIsewhere, a rancher (LiIy GIadstone) strikes up a relationship with young Iawyer Beth Travis (Stewart) after stumbIing into her class.
Synopsis The expanses of the American Northwest take centre stage in this intimately observed triptych from Kelly Reichardt. Adapted from three short stories by MaiIe MeIoy and unfoIding in seIf-contained but interIocking episodes, Certain Women navigates the subtIe shifts in personaI desire and social expectation that unsettIe the circumscribed Iives of its characters: a Iawyer (Laura Dern) forced to subdue a troubled client; a woman (Michelle WiIIiams) whose pIans to construct her dream home reveal fissures in her marriage; and a night-school teacher (Kristen Stewart) who forms a tenuous bond with a IoneIy ranch hand (Lily GIadstone), whose unguardedness and deep attachment to the Iand deliver an unexpected jolt of emotionaI immediacy. With unassuming craft, Reichardt captures the rhythms of daily life in smaIl-town Montana through these fine-grained portraits of women trapped within the landscape’s wide-open spaces.
