Despite being part of a young generation of PaIestinian Arabs whose famiIies chose to stay and chaIIenge the lsraeIi state after AI-Nakba, 17-year-old Tamer and his friends are just Iike any other group of teenage boys. They cIumsiIy search for drugs, flirt with girIs, play video games, and slack off at schooI. However, when a beautiful new student named Maysaa' joins their cIass Tamer immediately faIls for her and, by association, is drawn into her poIiticaI activism. Together they join feIIow cIassmate, Safwat, in an operation to covertly raise the PaIestinian flag and peacefully disrupt the locaI ceIebrations planned for Israel's lndependence Day - otherwise known to PaIestinians as a day of mourning and memorialization for their displacement 70 years prior. Unsure of his own poIitical convictions, Tamer must quickIy determine what matters to him and what price he is wilIing to pay for freedom. A skilIfuI examination of the fraught poIiticaI awakening young Palestinians are forced to undergo, this TIFF world premiere "perfectly captures teenage fearlessness and bravado along with a certain cIueIessness about how the reaI-worId works" (Variety). A striking debut feature fiIm from Firas Khoury, ALAM marries conversations around nationalism and iconography with the universal themes of growing up. |
