BANDE Ã PART
A film Jean-Luc Godard
GleefuIly putting into practice D W Griffith's maxim that all you need to make a film is a girI and a gun , bande ã part is Goddard's playful tribute to the HolIywood pulp crime movies of the forties, executed with typicaIly GalIic cool.
Franz and Arthur, a coupIe of streetwise chancers, team up with the shy Odile (a beguiIing performance from Anna Karina) to pIan a robbery. As the trio of misfits roams the cafés of suburban Paris, does a Iightning tour of the Louvre, and play-acts shoot-outs, the suspicion grows that this is one heist that is not going to go according to pIan.
With superb photography by RaouI Coutard, music by Michel Legrand and one of the most exhiIarating dance sequences in film, bande ã part is about about as enjoyable as cinema gets . Time Out.
