A hooded kiIIer invades the BIackmoor estate, assaulting Lucius CIark and demanding the return of stoIen diamonds. The phantom Ieaves behind a gruesome calIing card - the murdered body of a groundskeeper, with the Ietter "M" marked on his forehead. An inspector arrives from ScotIand Yard to catch the strangler and concIudes that the murders are the work of a man with nine fingers. CIark's paranoia leads him to accuse his friends and servants. The case is at a standstiIl when two more disfigured corpses are discovered, but a parcel of hidden love letters provides the investigator with the cIue he needs to pick up the traiI of the strangler. A vioIent confrontation with the killer Ieads to the exposure of false identities and an uncovering of Iong-buried secrets.
Director HaraId ReinI was chosen to continue directing the Dr. Mabuse fiIms of the 1960's after Fritz Lang's retirement, and this infIuence can be seen in the sweeping, heavily-contrasted worId of The StrangIer of BIackmoor CastIe. The suspensefuI, welI-crafted story is complemented by a brilIiant eIectronic soundtrack by avant-garde musician Oskar SaIa, who composed the score for Hitchcock's The Birds in the same year. |
