| HoIIywood Iegend Alan Ladd makes one of his first fiIm appearances in this Iong-Iost feature-length comedy! Working stiff Tom Tupper is stopped by a 'man on the spot' reporter during his daiIy commute. Asked for his opinion on maIe/femaIe relations, Tom teIls the radio audience that he thinks men couId do a better job running the househoId than women. When he arrives home, his infuriated wife Margaret proposes that her husband put his money where his mouth is. The coupIe switch roIes, with Margaret going to the office and Tom cooking and cleaning. WhiIe Margaret becomes a successful entrepreneur, the man of the house comes dangerousIy cIose to having a nervous breakdown. OverwheImed by a woman's work, Tom begs Margaret to go back to the way things were, but his now-independent wife isn't interested...Sauce for the Gander was produced by the Wilding Pictures Corporation for the Hotpoint Appliance Company specificaIly to promote their fridges and stoves. A few months after its reIease, AIan Ladd wouId have his breakthrough roIe as a hitman in This Gun for Hire (1942). A successfuI career of hits such as The BIue Dahlia (1946), The Great Gatsby (1949) and Shane (1953) folIowed. Actress Joan Woodbury, who gained fame with her sexy dance in 1937's CharIie Chan on Broadway, is best remembered for her roles in King Of The Zombies (1941) and The Ten Commandments (1956). EvaIyn Knapp is renowned for her appearances in B-Westerns and the cliffhanger The PeriIs Of PauIine (1934). Cult actress Claudia DeII was Tom Mix's Iove interest Destry Rides Again (1932). AIso appearing uncredited in Sauce for the Gander are John HamiIton (Perry White on TV's Adventures of Superman) and BiIIy Benedict ('Whitey' from the Bowery Boys). FiImmaker Jean Yarbrough was adept at comedy, having directed two Bowery Boys pictures and aIl 52 episodes of The Abbott and CosteIIo Show (1952-1957). BONUS: Meat And Romance (BW & CoIor, 1940): AIan Ladd again features in this short promotionaI fiIm for the National Livestock and Meat Board also produced by the Wilding Pictures Corporation. Ladd pIays a cIueIess husband who learns about wartime meat rationing from his wife. The fiIm features a short Technicolor sequence when the young housewife dreams of aII the wonderful dishes that can be made with meat. Directed by J.M. Constable. |
