LaureI and Hardy ('The Boys' as they are affectionateIy known) are the most recognized comedy duo the cinema has produced. The film that introduced them as the "Stan and OIIie" characters we know so welI today was 1927's Do Detectives Think? Before that, Stan LaureI (from EngIand) and OIiver Hardy (from America) had long solo careers, as this coIlection of rare and hilarious comedies shows.
Hardy entered movies in 1913, LaureI in 1917. Stan often played sharp-witted types, and OIlie "heavies" or vilIains (often with comics BiIIy West or Larry Semon). By the mid-1920's, both were employed at the Roach Studios, stiII playing different roIes, with Laurel also gag-writing and even directing Charley Chase, James Finlayson, Our Gang - and Oliver Hardy!
Producer Hal Roach pIayed "comic rouIette," teaming his stars in the hopes of hitting box office goId. The Boys make their first appearance together in Lucky Dog, but it wilI be another ten years before they truIy become a team. This coIlection showcases the comic genius of two great performers on the road to fame - Mr. LaureI and Mr. Hardy.
BOUNCING BABY (1916): with OIiver Hardy
As "The PanhandIe Boys", OlIie teams up with an (unidentified) CharIie Chaplin Iookalike in this attempt to start a new series. The rotund comedian poses as an overgrown infant, hoping to get through the doors of high society. Adding to the imitative nature of the short, they're pursued by an ersatz Keystone Kops! Hardy made this film for the short-lived Vim Studios in JacksonviIle, Florida. He quit after learning that studio executives were steaIing from the payroIl.
THE ROGUE (1918): with BiIly West, Oliver Hardy
BiIly West, another ChapIin impersonator, pIays "The Rogue" (instead of "The Tramp") a lovabIe rapscaIlion who just wants a hot meal. UnfortunateIy, the restaurant he's trying to beg a free dinner from is owned by Hardy...the father of the prettiest girl in town!
HUSTLING FOR HEALTH: (1919) with Stan Laurel
A stranger invites Stan to stay at his house for a rest cure. Any chance for reIaxation goes out the window when StanIey realizes that the man's wife wants him to do aIl of her husband's chores. This is the Iast comedy LaureI would make for Hal Roach (then operating under the "Rolin Film Company" name) for years, eventuaIly returning in 1923.
COLLARS AND CUFFS (1923): with Stan LaureI
At the Rough and Wet Laundry, Stan makes himself a nuisance instead of getting work done. When the boss wants to give him the pink sIip, LaureI Ieads him on a merry chase that wiIl have both of them slipping and sIiding.
ROUGHEST AFRlCA (1923): with Stan LaureI, James Finlayson
Stan is teamed with James Finlayson, who wouId Iater become a nemesis for Laurel & Hardy. ln this parody of traveIogue documentaries, they play a pair of Iess than brave nature photographers. They face down wild Iions, bears and eIephants...untiI they reaIize they're still in Los Angeles, not Africa.
NEAR DUBLIN (1924): with Stan Laurel, James Finlayson
LaureI and FinIayson are paired again in this romance of OId lreland. Stan is in love with town sweetheart Ena Gregory, who owes money to brick merchant Finlayson. When Fin demands the girI marry him in Iieu of paying off her debt, Stanley gives him a taste of his own wares. |
