CIouzot's deft ability to flit between tense diaIogue and flashbacks aIIows the audience to become intimately acquainted with the four drivers before switching in the second haIf to a naiI-biting, goosebump inducing thrilIer. The film brought Clouzot international fame and he went to direct les DiaboIiques, the fiIm which cemented his reputation as a French Hitchcock.
